Crosscut Mountain Sports Center in Bozeman (406-579-6930, www.crosscutmt.org) is next to the alpine ski area Bridger Bowl and is a popular cross country ski day area only 16 miles from Bozeman. There are 50 km of high quality groomed trails for classic and skate skiing on private and Forest Service land. This area is known for its 15-foot wide trails, impeccable grooming and skier clinics. This is the former Bohart Ranch and a new facility and organization is moving forward to bring a full slate of trail activities within a couple of year. Lone Mountain Ranch offers 75 km of international-caliber Nordic skiing for all levels, with groomed and skating lanes. The trail system winds through open meadows and forested canyons. Deluxe, cozy cabins with fireplace and full bath can be rented for a week, with all meals, trail pass and evening programs based on the group and cabin size. The Ranch has a Nordic shop with apparel, equipment and mementos. Children ages 12 and younger ski free. Half-day tickets are available, as are lessons. XC ski and snowshoe equipment rentals available. Fly fishing, too. Located just 18 miles from the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park, there are endless opportunities to ski tour and view wildlife in the park during the winter. LMR received the 2002 ORVIS Endorsed Lodge of the Year Award and it is a historic property originally homesteaded in 1915, with some of the original cabins built in 1926 still being enjoyed by guests today.
