Cross-Country Skiing
and Snowshoeing
at Mt. Bachelor,
Oregon
The
Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center, (541-382-2442, www.mtbachelor.com)
across the parking lot from the Alpine area's West Village base lodge,
has 56 km of machine-set trails that are groomed daily. There are 12 loops, from the easy 1
km First Time Around to the challenging 12 km Oli's Alley. The 6 km
intermediate xc ski trail called Zigzag leads to a heated shelter with
good views. The center has equipment rental, clothing and accessories,
repairs, trail and lesson information and lunch. Most of the terrain
is best suited for intermediate cross country skier levels. Children
younger than 7 ski free.
Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center ranges in elevation from 5,750' to 6,400' and as the xc ski area with the longest ski season in North America has skiing through mid-June. Average snowfall is 370".
The U.S. Forest
Service, with a desk on the lower floor of Mt. Bachelor's West Village
lodge, has several interpretive programs, including a snowshoe tour
with a USFS naturalist. Someone is available on weekends and daily during
Christmas vacation.
