The Beacons of Minocqua (800/236-3225, www.thebeacons.com) is a lakefront resort on 13 acres that is private but close to town with a wide range of lodging options including condos, lodge units, and cabins. Nearby to Minocqua Winter Park for cross country skiing and snowshoeing, and right across the lake from town for restaurants and shopping in Minocqua.
There are condos with 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms, townhomes, 4 bedroom, lodges, suites all with amenities such as full kitchen, fieldstone fireplace, TV, Internet access, decks, and great views. The Northwoods Log Cabins are secluded and available in 2 story and with 2 or 4 bedroom accommodations sleeping up to 8-9 people ranging in price up to $375 per night. Other amenities include DVD players and 2-person whirlpool tubs.
The Beacons is one of the largest facilities in the area and it is spectacularly lit up in the winter. It has a game room, fitness room, indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna and movie rentals. There is also ice skating and sledding outdoors.
Directions: From the south, take Us Highway 51, turn left onto Northern Road with Island City Lanes bowling alley on the corner and go 1.25 miles to The Beacons on the right. Less than 225 miles from Minneapolis and 250 miles from Madison.
