Cross-Country Skiing at Hardwood Ski & Bike

Just north of Toronto is Hardwood Ski & Bike (800-387-3775; 705-487-3775; www.hardwoodskiandbike.ca) with 10 loops of xc skiing and snowshoeing on more than 40 km of trails (22 km are for snowshoers). The trails offer skiers of every ability machine groomed for classic and skate skiing on a daily basis. Hardwood has a ski shop, rental shop, and a cafe on the premises. New trails (10 km) called the Meadowlands will be opened in December 2013 that are mostly gentle terrain, which is part of the old Hardwood trail system and will be great for new skiers. Hardwood Ski & Bike is a four time Readers Choice award winner for Best Cross Country Ski Area in Eastern Canada in "Get Out There Magazine."

The trails are open 8 AM - 8 PM Mon-Fri and 8 AM - 5 PM on weekends and holidays. Night skiing is available on 3 km of lighted trails, or skiers can use headlamps available for rent. Prices posted on this page do not include taxes (HST), which are charged at the area. Trail ski passes are $21.95 for an adult full day and $19.50 for half day, which is until 12:30 PM or 1:00 - 4:45 PM. Seniors who are 60 and older, and students aged 13-19 are $19.50 and $16.95, respectively. Kids aged 5-12 are $13.95 full day and $11.50 half day. There are showers available for early morning skiers who want to ski before work. Evening skiing (Mon-Fri) is $15.50 for adults, $12.50 for seniors or students, and $8.75 for kids. Snowshoe trail passes are $12.95 for everyone.

Patrons are able to exchange their trail pass to ski are Gatineau Park in a reciprocal offering. Look for "Ski Better Clinics," which are 2-hour sessions held on special days during the winter for classic or skate skiing. Also, look for monthly "Moonlight Snowshoe & Fondue" tours on select dates.

Lessons and rental equipment is available at Hardwood with prices offered for full or half days. Salomon ski equipment rentals are $28.50 for a full day and $23.50 for a half day. Students (8-19) are $23.50 and $19.95 and kids aged 7 and under are $19.95 full day and $14.50 for a half day. Skating equipment runs $39.50 for a full day and $34.50 half day and there is a performance skate available, too. Atlas Snowshoes are rented for $18.95 full day and $16.95 for a half day. There are discounted family group rental packages and introduction lessons available.

Summer activities at Hardwood Ski & Bike include mountain biking and disc golf. There is equipment to rent and there are clinics available. Camp Hardwood is organized for kids in age groups for mountain biking, beach volleyball, arts & crafts, disc golf, low ropes, and more. A Mountain Bike Academy has clinics and programs for youth and women in a 3-hour or full day format. Hardwood also has a Dryland Training Camp for xc skiing and women's clinics during the late summer.
