Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

The Birches
Ski Touring Center (800/825-WILD or 9453, www.birches.com) in Rockwood,
ME is on the western shore of Moosehead Lake. This 11,000 acre private
reserve offers 40 km of groomed xc ski trails and 50 km of ungroomed
trails. There are cabins and a log lodge with a restaurant. Lessons,
xc ski and snowshoe equipment rentals are available. Outdoor sauna and
hot tub.
A Fierce Chase
XC Ski Trails (207-997-3971, www.afiercechase.com) is in Monson
with 14 km of groomed trails for classic and skate skiing. There are
cross country ski lessons, and xc ski and snowshoe equipment rentals
available. Guided full moon wildlife tours. In 2002, A Fierce Chase
was recognized as the Eco-Active Leadership Award winner for xc ski
resorts for its commitment to wildlife education. CCSAA

Maine
Winter Sports Center
(207-328-0991, www.mainewsc.org) is in Limestone, ME offering 13 trail
systems in Aroostock County. This is a world class xc ski and biathlon
center with locker rooms and lighted xc ski trails. There are xc ski
equipment rentals and lessons. These trails are free to the public.
Millinocket Municipal
XC Ski Area (207-723-4329) is in Millinocket, ME and it has 40 km
of groomed xc ski trails, which are free to the public.
Maine Dogsledding
Adventures (207-731-8888, www.mainedogsledding.com) in Millincocket,
ME offers dog sled tours and day trips on 10 km of groomed xc ski trails
at Nahmakanta Lake Camps and Baxter Park. There are no snowmobiles allowed
in the park. Take a dog sled to cabin or historic lodge accommodations
with home cooked meals.
