Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

at Salmon Hills - 100 Noble Shores Drive, Redfield, NY 13437

Salmon Hills Outdoor Adventure Center (315/599-7008 www.salmonhills.com) in Redfield, New York features a four-season yurt village on the Tug Hill plateau between Lake Ontario and the Adirondacks in one of the snowiest areas east of the Rockies. There are 32 km of 12-foot wide trails groomed for classic and skating with 2 km of lighted trails. There are separate trails for snowshoers.

Trail fees are $12 daily and $15 for weekends or holidays. There are half day rates and junior and senior discounts available and kids under 6 are free. Night skiing is $7 for the daily rate and $9 on weekends or holidays.

A complete retail ski shop is on site. Lessons and xc ski and snowshoe equipment rentals are available and there is snow tubing, too. Lessons are $17 for an adult and $15 for a child or senior. Group lessons are at 10, 12, and 2. Private lessons are $40 for an individual and $18 for an additional person and are held at 11 and 1 PM.

Basic xc ski rental equipment is $17 on the weekend for adults and $12 for kids and seniors and performance rentals are $20 and $15 respectively. Half day and night rentals are priced lower. Head lamps are available to rent for night skiing (Wed, Fri and Sat 4:30-9 PM) and baby back carriers are free to use.

Here is an aerial view of Salmon Hills. Besides the yurts, Salmon Hills also has a log cabin two-story lodge with 8 rooms for over night accommodations. The new owner is the experienced Hans Karlsen from High Point XC Ski Center, outside of New York City, who has decades of operating a successful xc ski resort in a state park.

 

New for Salmon Hills is dog sledding with world class musher, Roy Smith for $25 for a 15-minute ride per person and $150 for a 2 hour ride. This offer is unique for dog sledding. Ski jor lessons are also available at the same price as ski lessons but you need to arrange to have a dog to pull you. Reservations required.

There is access from Salmon Hills to extensive snowmobile trails and special lodging rates for snowmobiliers. Summer activities include hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking (flat water and white water).

From the north take I-81 to exit 36 and go left on Route 2 east for 13 miles to Noble Shores Drive. From the east and the NY Thruway I-90 take the Rome exit 32 and go west on Route 69, right on 285 to Route 27 then Route 17 North and make a left on County Route 2. CCSAA member.
