High Point Cross Country Ski Center (973/702-1222, www.xcskihighpoint.com) in Sussex, New Jersey is located in the High Point State Park, which is the highest altitude (1,600 feet) and one of most beautiful places in the northern part of the state. Guaranteed as the snowiest spot in the metropolitan area High Point is an alpine hollow of lakes, trees and sweeping vistas.

There are 15 km of groomed trails for classic and skate cross country skiing and snowmaking to assure the ski conditions for a longer season.

Madshus xc skis, Alpina xc ski boots and Tubbs snowshoes are featured in the retail shop, which offers a full selection of equipment, clothing and accessories for touring, racing and backcountry skiing with hard to find products such as rollerskis.There are guided snowshoe tours and 8 km of snowshoe trails. A few of the trails are used by dog sledders at night during the week.

Trail fees are $16 for adults on the weekend and $14 for children (5-12) or seniors (62+). Weekday fees and half days at 1:00 PM are less. Rental xc ski equipment is $20 on the weekend and $18 for kids and seniors and snowshoes are $17 on the weekend and $15 for kids and seniors. Again, weekday rates and half days are lower prices. Performance equipment rentals are also available.

Group xc ski lessons are held at 10, 12, and 2 for $17 adults and $15 kids or seniors. Private lessons are held at 11 AM and 1 PM and are $28.

Special events include the Winter Trails snowshoe day on January 6th, 2007.

The High Point Monument in the park is 1,803 feet and the area is under contract with the State of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protecton Division of Parks and Forestry. From New York City take Route 80 West (points south take Route 287 North) to 23 North. CCSAA member
