Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

at Garnet Hill Lodge

Garnet Hill in North River, NY (800-497-4207, 518-251-2444, www.garnet-hill.com) is home of the "Adirondack Ruby" in an old garnet mining community. The mine tailings are multi-leveled with open areas sculpted with hills, slopes, flat areas, and mountain vistas. The resort has 55 km of trails groomed for classic and skate skiing. Garnet Hill has lake and mountain views, accommodations and dining, rentals, snowshoes, and lessons. There are 2 km of lighted trail night skiing and a working sugarhouse in the spring. Garnet Hill is at 2,000 feet elevation and it has a full ski shop (Ski Shop phone 518-251-2150) and the unique Ski Down Ride Back shuttle bus.

Skullbuster Hill is a thrill for advanced skiers winding through stands of white birch with views of the high peaks including Mt. Marcy, the highest peak in New York state.

Adult trail pass rate is $17 per day, Youth (13-17) and senior (above 65) is $15 and Junior (5-12) is $8. Rental gear is $17 per day $12 for Junior and after 2 PM it is $14 and $10 respectively. Snowshoe rentals are $15 or $12 for Juniors with half day rates at $11 and $9. A package with rentals, lesson, and a trail pass is $44 for adults, $42 for Youth or Senior, and $30 for Junior. Pulk rentals are available for toddlers and there is skate or steel edge equipment, too.

Lessons are 1 hour and 15 minutes with the group lessons held at 10 AM and 2 PM for $18. Private lessons are $45 and semi-private $30 per person. A book of 10 lessons that is transferrable is $150.

There are three buildings with accommodations including the Log House, The Birches, and The Tea House. The Log House has window views of the lake and mountains with a huge stone hearth ringed with rocking chairs and couches. The main room is for dining and there are 16 guest rooms with private baths. These rooms are priced at $115 and up. There is a family-friendly game room with ping pong, pool table, TV, and 2 computers. Garnet Hill has free WiFi Internet access. The Miner's Pub is a full service bar.

The Birches priced at $135 and up feature 5 large guest rooms that are great for families and the Tea House has 4 guest rooms with king size beds, whirlpool baths, and Direct TV. The Tea Room prices start at $140. Garnet Hill also has rental houses and vacation homes.

Meals range from bistro style to many dishes with robust soups, hearty salads, fresh herb & wine stews, gratins, and bakery delights.

The Nordic 3-Night Package is available starting on Sun, Mon, or Tues and includes dinner, BF, and xc ski trail pass each day starting at $295 double occupany (taxes, gratuities are add'l). Nearby is Gore Mountain for alpine skiing.

Directions: From south take I-87, exit 23. Rte 9 to Rte 28 to North iver. From north take exit 26. Follow signs to Gore Mountain and North Creek off Rte 28. Make a left on 13rh Lake Road and go 5 miles to Garnet Hill.
