Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing at

Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area in Red River, NM (575-754-6112) www.enchantedforestxc.com has 30 km of trails groomed for classic and skate skiing and 18 km for snowshoeing. Enchanted Forest is known for the entertaining events and the great scenic views in its 500 acres of ancient forests, aspen groves, and sweeping meadows in the Carson National Forest (that's Kit Carson for you history buffs). There are xc ski equipment rentals and lessons available at the center. Ski and snowshoe rentals are $15 per day and $12 after 12:30 PM. High performance gear is $20 per day and $15 for half day. The pulk sled is $15 for a day or $3.50 per hour. Group lessons are $25 per person for beginner, intermediate or skating at 10 AM or 1:30 PM. Private lessons are available at $50 for an hour with lower prices for 2nd person or half hour. Numerous scenic views from the trails including Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico and downtown Red River.
Enchanted Forest has a warming hut day lodge for a snack and two new shelters on the trails and new for this year a yurt is available for winter camping accommodations. The yurt is heated with a box wood stove and there are kitchen items. A pulk sled is available for you to transport your sleeping bags, pillows, and food. There is no running water at the yurt. Price is $75 per night Sunday-Friday and $125 on Saturday night. There is a 2-night minimum ont he weekends for $200 and the Lodgers Tax is not included. No refunds on cancellations but you can select another date within a year.
Ladies Snowshoe Tour every Thursday at 12:30 for two hours for $5 with a $5 snowshoe rental available - and there are also naturalist and head lamp Snowshoe Cookout Tours that are offered on 1/8, 2/12, and 3/5. Moonlight Tours on 12/18, 1/15, and 2/19. Bring the dog for the 5 km of smooth groomed trails open to them to ski with you if they are under voice command. No trail fee for the dog and there are waste bags along the trail. Lodging and services are in the town, which is a step back to the Old West in the Sangre de Christo Mountains.
Open daily 9AM - 4:30 PM. $15 for trail pass; $12 for 13-17 or seniors 62+; and $7 for 12 and under. Half day prices are available at 12:30 PM. Three day punchcard available for discounted trail fees. Nearby alpine ski areas include Taos, Angel Fire, Red River Ski Area and there is also skiing at the Wild Rivers Rec Area.
