Cross-Country Skiing and

Snowshoeing at Great Glen Trails

Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center (603/466-2333, www.greatglentrails.com) has 40 km of cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails in Pinkham Notch at the base of Mt. Washington, which translates into jaw-dropping scenery all around you. On Route 16, Great Glen has spectacular panoramic views of the northern Presidential Mountain Range. Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center's new lodge is open with 20,000 square foot facility that includes a climbing wall, new xc ski and snowshoe rental equipment, lessons, tubing, food service in the Great Glen View Cafe and a large xc skiing retail space.

One loop and the learning area at Great Glen have snowmaking. Instruction programs include the Discover Series with an hour and half introduction to any of 3 xc ski disciplines (track, skating, backcountry) that include rental equipment and a trail pass all for $35. The sessions are offered 3 times daily on weekends and twice on weekdays. The Explore Series offers existing skiers a one hour session for further development of skills and techniques while the Master Series provides personalized coaching on any xc ski activity in a one-on-one.

The Glen View Cafe is the defending champion of the regional chilli cook off after winning the 2004 People's Choice Award for best chilli. Women's Wednesdays is a weekly program for women taught by Sue Wemyss, who is an Olympian and long time ski teacher. Check out the full slate of special events and programs.

Telemarkers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers can take a snowcoach partly up the Mt. Washington Auto Road to 4,000 foot elevation at the treeline, then ski down; sightseers also are welcome on the snowcoach. The resort also has a snowtubing park.

A new package concept for a day of winter fun at Great Glen offers the T3- Total Trails Ticket that includes trail pass, xc ski or snowshoe rental gear, all day access to the snow tubing hill, session on the climbing wall, and a tour on the SnowCoach up Mt. Washington. Adult T3 is a $96 value for $59. Kids aged 5-12 is $60 value for $40. The T3 must be used on the same day. CCSAA member.
