Eagle Mountain House (800-966-5779; www.eaglemt.com), in Jackson Village, NH is right on the trails of Jackson Ski Touring Center. It has 96 guest rooms and suites in one of the last remaining "grand era" hotels with Victorian architecture and rustically elegant public areas.

Beautiful mountain views all around and the trails of Jackson are out the door. There is a health club, hot tub, saunas and game room. And most rooms have wireless Internet service.

Eagle Mountain House is listed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is one of only two New Hampshire lodging facilities that is among the Historic Hotels of America membership.

Highfields Restaurant offers full service and there is also the Eagle's Landing Tavern for lighter fare. Sunday Champagne Jazz Brunch is a 100-year tradition with a deliciously savored buffet on long winding tables with flowers, ice sculptures and enough for a hearty appetite. Directions from the south take I-93 to exit 23, Rte 114, Rte 104E, Rte 25E to Route 16 through Conway and N.Conway, in Glen take a right on Rte 16N; from Portland, Maine take Rte 22W, Rte 114, Rte 25, Rte 113N, Rte 302W, Rte 16N. Turn into the covered bridge into Jackson Village, bear left at the fork in the road and turn right on Carter Notch Road. Eagle Mountain House is 3/4 of a mile on the left.
