This peaceful and secluded family-run facility in the Isabella Pine Belt is off limits to snowmobiles so you'll be assured remote quietness. Cross the Little Isabella River on small wooden bridges and make your way to the frozen lake. Wildlife such as moose, deer, and wolf are evidenced by their snow tracks and if you're lucky you might see them, too. National Forest Lodge has 10 rustic cabins and a modern log home. The variety of cabins accommodate 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 people and there is a central bath and shower house but no running water in the cabins. The log home has 2 full baths. There is WiFi in the main lodge where all meals are served homemade with vegetarian options at every meal, if needed. Hot and cold beverages are available anytime in the lodge. There's free entertainment on Saturday night. The lakeside sauna and outdoor hot tub are big hits at the lodge. Prices start at $198 per person for a 2-day weekend (arrive Fri eve and leave on Sun) and $258 per person for a 3-day weekend (arrive Fri eve and leave on Mon). There are no xc ski or snowshoe rentals, so bring your own gear. You'll also need linens, pillows, and towels. For another affiliated quiet facility check the Baptism River Inn B & B.
Directions: Take Highway 61 north from Duluth to Two Harbors. Take County Road 2 north to Ely and Isabella (about 50 miles) and watch for the change to Forest Road 11. Turn right on Highway 1 and go 6 miles. Nat'l Forest Lodge is between Mile Marker 317 and 318.
