Cross-Country Skiing with Boundary Country Trekking

Boundary Country Trekking in northern Minnesota is 30 miles from Grand Marais on the north eastern edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Gunflint Trail (800-322-8327; 218-388-4487; www.boundarycountry.com). Boundary Country Trekking provides adventure vacations and charming secluded lodging located on the 41 km Banadad Ski Trail System and midway along the 200 km Gunflint Nordic Trail. The Banadad is a narrow and intimate single track trail through the wilderness and it is the BWCA's longest tracked ski trail.

Accommodations vary from the Poplar Creek Guesthouse B & B to the secluded cabins and the Banadad Yurts. Skiers and/or snowshoers can ski or trek right from the B & B or cabins, or go on a Yurt to Yurt adventure or a Lodge to Lodge adventure. Available specials include the Mongolian Firepot Dinner, "Special Time for Two," Honeymoon/Anniversary and others. There may also be Last Minute Special Rates available if you are lucky.

The Poplar Creek Guesthouse B & B overlooks Little Ollie Lake and Poplar Creek. The B & B has two bed and breakfast guestrooms and a suite. All the rooms have queen sized beds, private bath, phones, and internet service. Other amenities include a guest kitchen, fireplace, outside deck, and whirlpool. In the Guesthouse, typical prices for Dorothy's Room 12/16-3/26 are $125 for 2 people for the first night and $115 for additional nights. Ollie's Room is $148 for the first night and $135 for additional nights and these rooms include breakfast. Barbara's Suite is $132 for 2 people for the first night and $120 for additional nights and breakfast is $20 more for two people and there is a $30 charge for additional guests with breakfast.

BCT Yurt

Nearby but not within sight of the B & B are two secluded cabins. The Poplar Creek Retreat Cabin has 2 bedrooms and accommodates up to 6 guests. There is a kitchen with a dishwasher, electric heat, front porch and side deck and each bedroom has its own bath and shower. The second floor has a whirlpool tub. Prices for 12/20-3/21 are $175 per night midweek for 2 people and $195 per night on weekends or holidays.

The 2 bedroom Little Ollie Lake Cabin overlooks the lake. It is equipped with kitchen, bath with shower, electric heat, free-standing fireplace stove, TV, and sauna. Rates for 12/20-3/21 are $150 per night midweek for 2 people and $180 per night on weekends or holidays.

The Banadad Yurts include the Tall Pines Yurt and the two yurts at Bedew Lake. Yurts are round peak-roofed canvas covered huts with woodstove heat. The yurts can each accommodate up to 6 guests, who sleep on a futon and bunkbeds. In the yurts there is a kitchen, dining table and chairs, an attached deck, and a nearby outhouse. At the Tall Pines Yurt there is a Finnish sauna. To get to the Tall Pines Yurt there is a 1 km ski or snowshoe. The Bedew Yurts are near the center of the trail system. It is a 19 km ski from the Tall Pines Yurt at the eastern end of the Banadad to the Bedew Yurts, and another 12 km from these yurts to the west end of the Banadad Trail. A 2-night Yurt to Yurt Adventure without meals starts at $315 midweek or $350 weekend/holiday for a group of up to 4 skieres. The deluxe for 2-3 people for 2 nights is $340 per person includes the Mongolian Firepot Dinner. It is lower priced per person for larger groups. All yurt-to-yurt trips include shuttling of gear/food in and out on a separate trail and the moving of guest vehicles from one end of the Banadad to the other.

To reach Boundary Country Trekking from Duluth, MN take Highway 61 north 112 miles to Grand Marais. Turn west on the Gunflint Trail, which is Cook County Road 12. Go 29 miles to Lima Glade Road (Forest Road 315) and take a left; go 1 mile and take a right at Little Ollie Road and go 1 mile to lodging.
