The Carter's XC Ski Centers (207-539-4848, www.cartersxcski.com)
are in Bethel and Oxford. Maine. The Bethel location has beautiful views of the Mahoosuc and Presidential mountain ranges, and the land
has been in the Carter family for generations. The Oxford trails are great for beginner and
intermediate xc skiers.
The trails are open from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Trail passes are $14 per day
for adults, $10 for students aged 6-18 and senior citizens, and kids under 6
years old ski free.
Carter's
XC Ski Center in Bethel
is on 1,000 acres and has 55 km of groomed trails and 3 lodges. The Willow
Brook Lodge can accommodate a family of group up to 8 people. There are 3
bedrooms and 4 baths, a full kitchen, living area, fireplace, and appliances.
The lodge rents for $275 per night for up to 6 guests. A single room in the
lodge is available for 2 guests for $99. Each additional guest is $30 per
night.
The Farwell Mountain Cabin has a wood stove and sleeps up to 8. Overnight
accommodations are $99 for 2 guests and $30 for each additional guest.
The Oxford location has a full Ski Equipment
Center retail store
with an extensive product selection and 25 km of groomed trails. The store
hours are 10 -5. On Tuesdays there is a 2 for 1 trail pass offer at the Oxford ski center.
In Oxford,
the Welchville Inn Bed & Breakfast offers
accommodations in an 1820 restored farm house. The rates are $100 for 2
guests, which includes breakfast and trail passes.
There
are rental equipment for xc ski, snowshoeing and
backcountry and race skiing. Rentals area $14 for a xc ski package and $10 for kids under 5 feet. Snowshoes
rent for $12. Backcountry and racing rental gear is more. Demo equipment is
on hand and there are pulk sleds to take babies or
toddlers on the trails with you. Ski instruction is available for $15 in
group lessons or $50 for private lessons.
Directions: Take I-95 to Exit 63 at Gray. Make left at stop light, then
right on Route 26A. Go 19 miles to the Carter's store in Oxford. The store is on the left. Look for
the skiing raccoon. From Oxford, the Bethel area is about 35 miles north on
Rte. 26 to the high school in Bethel
and then take a right on Intervale Road and 3.5 miles
to Carter’s.
The Sunday River Ski Resort, which is one of the most comprehensive alpine
ski resorts in New England
is nearby. Bethel, ME
