BACKCOUNTRY HUT SKIING

The skiing experience in the Sawtooths is a well-kept secret. The Sawtooth's high alpine reaches are laced with granite spires and inviting cirques. The shoulders of these and other surrounding mountain ranges offer superb backcountry slope skiing and the forests of pine and aspen are a delight for Nordic ski touring. At day's end, a Mongolian style yurt welcomes you for dinner or an evening’s rest before heading out for another great day in the backcountry.

The catered backcountry dinner tour at the Boulder Yurt is one mile by xc ski or snowshoe. Upon arrival good times and a 4-course feast with catered cuisine, wine, games and stories await you. Songs and trips to the sauna are optional.

Huts and yurts sleep 8-14 people with weekday rates at $150/night, weekend or private rates are $300/night. Hut to hut tours can be booked by special arrangement. A half day trip is $90 per person and a full day trip is $100/person for groups of 3 or more. Private half and full day tours (1 or 2 people) are $200 and $300 respectively. The guided packages include hut rental (if applicable), food, and guiding/instruction.

Summer rentals are available and trekkers can go on a wildflower and bird walk or climb a peak. In Yellowstone National Park the summer with Sun Valley Trekking includes fly fishing sub-alpine lakes, geyser basins, and hot springs.

Some scheduled programs include Level I Avalanche Course on Jan 4-6 and Feb 1-3. Chix on Stix, an all women hut skiing adventure on Mar 10-12. Monolith Valley Ski Mountaineering on April 4-8. The Sawtooth Haute Route it April 19-27 is a 9 day ski trek traverse with two pre-set caches along the route to keep packs light.

The Winter Wildlands Alliance Hut Trip is March 3-6, a 4-day, 3-night hut adventure in Idaho's Smoky Mountains near Sun Valley. The cost is $775 per person, which includes luxurious hut-stay, catered haute cuisine, transport from Ketchum/Sun Valley to the trailhead and back, guiding, and instruction. Trip proceeds benefit the Winter Wildlands Alliance.

Avalanche and snow condition reports are available 24 hours a day from the Ketchum Ranger District at 208-788-1200, ext. 8027. The Sun Valley Trekking company is permitted by the Sawtooth National Forest and the Yellowstone National Park.
