Cross Country Skiing & Many Other Activities at Snow Mountain Ranch

Near the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park in Granby, Colorado, Snow Mountain Ranch (800-777-9622, Nordic center at 888-573-9622; www.ymcarockies.org) has XC skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, sledding, tubing, sleigh rides and many indoor recreational activities along with affordable accommodations for friends, families, and groups. The ranch property is 5,200 acres with a Nordic center and 100 km of trails to accommodate first time skiers to elite racers with short easy loops and longer trails with steep climbs. Many activities are included with a Stay Pass, which is incorporated in the price of lodging. The Day Pass is $15 for those not staying on grounds.

The Nordic Center has a full service ski shop with retail products and the Skinny Ski Café for a light snack, soup, or sandwich. Hours are 8:30 AM – 5 PM. The adult ski trail pass for skiers older than age 6 is $15 per day and a guided snowshoe tour is $15 (if not staying on grounds). Tubing or sledding is free for guests or YMCA members and is included with the Stay or Day Pass.

Rental equipment includes classic XC skis or snowshoes for $18 or for a half day starting at 1:00 PM it is $14. Skate or performance ski equipment is $22 and $17 for a half day. Rental gear for a child under age 13 is $10 or $8 for a half day.

 

The group XC ski lesson is at 10:30 AM or 1:30 PM and it is $25 per person for a one hour lesson. Private ski lessons at 11:30 AM or 2:30 PM are $45 for the first person and $25 for each additional skier. A learn-to-ski package includes the trail fee, rental equipment and ski lesson for $50 for an adult or $40 for a child under age 13.

The Snow Mountain Ranch runs programs on Fridays 1-2:30 PM from January 18 – February 24 for kids aged 5-15 with skiing games, winter nature activity and ending with a Nordic ski festival. There are also free wax and ski maintenance clinics on Saturdays at 9:30-10:30 AM running from December through March.

Snow Mountain Ranch has a variety of lodging options with 79 rooms in the Indian Peaks Lodge ranging from $99-159 per night. The Aspenbrook Lodge and Silver Sage Lodge each has 47 rooms and range from $79-119. Another choice is an unheated yurt for $89 per night for a more rustic experience where you have to bring your own sheets, blankets, pillows, and towels. They do not shovel the yurt village paths or provide housekeeping and it can get really cold. Indoor activities on the property include an indoor pool, climbing wall, craft shop, library, roller skating rink, basketball and ping pong. The Snow Mountain Ranch is near alpine ski areas Winter Park and Sol Vista.
