The Breckenridge Nordic Ski Center (970/453-6855; www.breckenridgenordic.com), located just outside of the Victorian town of Breckenridge on Ski Hill Road on the way up to the Breckenridge Alpine ski area, has 30 km of trails groomed for skate and classic skiing for all abilities and 2 km of lighted trails. There are also 18 km of trails of scenic nature trails for snowshoeing. Beautiful spruce forests and spectacular views.
The Nordic Chalet at the trailhead area house equipment rentals, retail, snacks and drinks. There are lounges with wood burning stoves in the chalet, too. Josie's Cabin is a close destination on the trails. The New Nordic World on Peaks 6 & 7 offers 1,300 acres of newly expanded trails. The Hallejulah Hut is a destination that is heated and about 6 km out on the trails away. Kathy's Viewpoint is a warming hut along the trail that has a sauna. It is about 7.5 km from the Chalet. These huts can also be accessed by car within a one mile ski or snowshoe tour.
Trail passes also are valid at the Frisco Nordic Center and the Gold Run Nordic Center. Equipment rentals for xc ski or snowshoe package ($17 for adults, $12 for juniors or seniors, $20 for backcountry gear, $22 for performance gear), and pulk sleds are available. Special programs for men, women, children, and adaptive people. Everything a skier needs to get started. Try before you buy offer will deduct the cost of a rental or demo when equipment purchased.
A ski lesson, equipment and the trail pass is $47 for one person and $36 for junior or senior. Additional people in a lesson is $36 per and $25 for junior/senior. Interpretive Snowshoe Adventures are guided excursions with a one hour tour at $47, and $36 for each add'l hour. The guided tours include interpretive info such as biology, history, and geography and a snack with a drink.
Trail passes are interchangeable with Frisco Nordic Center and Gold Run Nordic Center on the Breckenridge Golf Course. There's a free Ski & Ride to Breckenridge Nordic Center from town or the alpine ski resort. The center is only a half mile up Ski Hill Road, past the Shock Hill Bridge and the second driveway on the right.
