Cross Country Skiing at Tahoe Donner Cross Country

Tahoe Donner Cross Country (530-587-9484; www.tdxc.com) is a premier facility located 10 minutes from downtown Truckee, CA (3.5 hours from San Francisco, 1.5 hours from Sacramento, 45 minutes from Reno) with more than 100 km of trails groomed daily for diagonal striding, skate skiing, and snowshoeing. Head out to ski or snowshoe on scenic trails through pine trees, climb challenging peaks, cruise along gentle rolling hills through aspens or glide along flat areas and meadows while exploring the Euer Valley. There are 4,800 acres of terrain, 56 trails (including 4 snowshoe-only) on 3 track systems with 5 warming huts.

Start at the XC ski day lodge on Alder Creek Road. This area has ample and easy parking, rental equipment, wax room, trail pass purchases, and a retail store, which has outerwear and accessories. The Day Lodge also has the Alder Creek Cafe known for fresh baked goods and wholesome food selections such as gourmet chili and freshly made wraps and sandwiches. Grab something to go for picnics in a spot where you'll enjoy stunning panoramic views.

The area has a wide variety of terrain to meet every skier or snowshoer's need from first timer to expert. Dog lovers can buy a special pass to ski with their dogs on 3 km of designated trails. Full day trail fees are $27 for an adult (13-59); $11 for those aged 7-12; $21 for those aged 60-74; and $11 for those aged 75+. There are lower trail fees and rentals for half day use at 1-5 PM, and for Twilight hours 3-5 PM.

Tahoe Donner prides itself in its quality of ski school and group lessons for adult first timers and private lessons for all levels are offered daily for striding and skating. Group lessons for kids are offered on the weekends and holidays with morning classes for ages 5-7 and afternoon classes for age 7 and older. The learn-to-ski package with rental equipment and a full day trail pass is $59 for a 60-75 minute group lesson or a group lesson only is $30 without the gear. The package with a half day trail pass is $49. Private lessons require reservations and are $55 for an hour and $20 for each additional person.

Rental equipment for stride, skate, and snowshoes are available for all day gear is $23 for those aged 13-59; and for those aged under 12 or 60+ it is $14. Afternoon rentals (1-5 PM) are $19 and $11 for kids/seniors. Twilight rentals (3-5 PM) are $13 and $8, respectively. Demo equipment is available for $29 all day, $25 for 1-5 PM, and $20 for twilight hours. Pulk sled rentals (to haul kids less than 40 lbs.) are $25 for the day and $20 for a 1-5 PM.
