The largest private trail system in North America is at Royal Gorge (530-426-3871; 800-500-3871, nationwide; 800-666-3871, N. CA only or locally at 560-426-3871; www.royalgorge.com) Royal Gorge has nearly 6,000 acres of terrain, and more than 200 km of trails all machine groomed with a skating lane inside the tracks. The base is 7,000 feet, which ensures reliable, consistent, not too dry or wet snow conditions.
There is a new day rising at Royal Gorge this season, as Sugar Bowl Resort takes over the resort operations at this iconic destination atop Donner Summit in the Lake Tahoe region of California. With $500,000 of capital improvement projects mobilized, classic and skate skiers and snowshoers will enjoy a renovated Summit Station lodge, a new fleet of grooming machines, enhanced wayfinding signage across the resort, a new website featuring up-to-the-minute snow trail and conditions reporting, and much more.
Patrons will also be able to acquire dual-resort combo passes, offering alpine ski area access to Sugar Bowl's 1,500 acres (and the most snow in Tahoe) and xc skiing at America's largest xc ski resort, boasting more than 200 km of trails on 6,000 acres of pristine land on Donner Summit. Interconnect trails between the two resorts will also be greatly enhanced allowing easy access for skiers of any level from the Sugar Bowl Village to the Van Norden Meadow.
Royal Gorge has four surface lifts to help skiers up the tougher inclines. It is a full-service ski area with trail passes, rentals, lessons, food and drinks and more.The views are spectacular with wide open vistas across high alpine meadows and breathtaking shots into the Royal Gorge and the river bed below. The new operators at Sugar Bowl Resort have their sights set on returning Royal Gorge to its once and former glory. Look for new info very soon.
