The
Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel (800-441-1414 in the U.S. and Canada;
762-2211), the wine-colored, Scottish-influenced castle perched on a
small hill, a short walk from downtown. You have seen this classic,
rundle-rock monolith in many photos with its pointed, green-copper roofs
rising from the nine-story walls, framed by evergreens and craggy peaks.
Its public areas are expansive, designed for turn-of-the-century mingling—we're
talking a ballroom for 16,000. The hotel has a magnificent, full-service
spa (available at an additional fee) with private mineral pool and waterfall
pools, saunas, steam rooms and whirlpools as well as a fitness room,
salons and treatment areas. There are also indoor and outdoor pools
available free to all guests as well as shops and restaurants and scheduled
activities, such as dogsledding and snowshoeing with guides. Rates during
the winter are a bargain compared to the summer. Ask about the Ski with
Breakfast package, including lodging, lift tix, ski shuttles, valet
parking and gratuities for two.
"An enclave of civility" is how the Rimrock Resort Hotel
(800-661-1587; 762-3356) describes itself, and we agree. It's posh,
sophisticated, elegant and refined, with a full-service spa and fitness
center, an excellent restaurant, comfortable lounge and views to match.
It is one of only five Canadian members of the Leading Hotels of the
World, a group of luxury hotels.
Topnotch at Stowe Resort & Spa (802-253-8585 or 800-451-8686;
in Canada 800-228-8686) boasts an excellent fitness center and spa.
Topnotch has rooms and condos, along with excellent meeting facilities.
It also has the only covered tennis courts in Stowe.
The Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa (802-253-7355 or 800-253-2232),
down the road a bit from the Golden Eagle, recently added a spa and
sports club as well as a new wing of deluxe rooms with fireplaces and
mountain views. Rates include breakfast and dinner. The Stoweflake also
manages a nice group of townhouse condominiums with studio to three-bedroom
units.
The
slopeside Vail Cascade Resort & Spa (800-420-2424; 476-7111;
left) lodges guests in rooms, suites and condominiums. The multi-award-winning
property includes the Aria Spa & Club, the Vail Valley's largest
fitness facility, as well as two ski shops, two movie theaters and its
own chairlift accessing Vail's slopes. There's free shuttle service
to Vail Village and Lionshead, and ski valet service. The Chap's Grill
& Chophouse specializes in steaks and grilled food as well as Colorado
specialties.
